SWEDISH MEATBALLS.- Old World Style and flavor... YUM!

SWEDISH MEATBALLS.- What do you think about when the image of Swedish Meatballs comes to mind? Of course, a rich and creamy gravy covering them and their noodles on your plate. YUM!

I've been making these, in many variations, for many years because we love Swedish Food! Portland has some of the best I've had out of Sweden in the most beautiful forest setting, just amazing offerings of coffee, Gravlax, fruit and cheeses, preserves....  This version is super easy and comes together quickly without sacrificing any of the flavor you're expecting...

Here's what you will need:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
  •  teaspoon Garlic Powder
  •  teaspoon Pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 5 tbsp. butter
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard
  • salt and pepper to taste

In a medium sized bowl combine ground beef, Panko, parsley, allspice, nutmeg, onion, garlic powder, pepper, salt and egg. Mix until well combined.

Roll into either large or small meatballs. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and 1 tblsp butter. Add the meatballs and cook turning continuously until browned on each side and cook through. Transfer to a plate and keep warm with foil.

Add 4 tbls butter and flour to pan and whisk until it turns brown and thick. Slowly stir in beef broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire Sauce and Dijon mustard, bring to a simmer until sauce starts to thicken. Salt and pepper to taste. You can also add some parsley cut fine if you wish.

Put the meatballs back into the sauce for 2-5 minutes to simmer, Serve over rice or noodles. Enjoy!
NOTE: Meatballs can be made with any meat, ground chicken, ground pork, ground turkey or fish.
